Neoturf CEO
With a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), Paulo Palha works to promote vegetation as an essential material in construction: green roofs, green walls, gardens and parks, as well as all nature-based solutions, are his areas of expertise.
He has always worked on the design of green roofs and nature-based solutions for cities, having coordinated hundreds of landscape architecture projects, green roofs and vertical gardens in Portugal and abroad.
He actively participates in research and development projects focused on nature-based solutions. He led the Green Urban Living project, which developed the first Portuguese green roof system produced entirely from waste from the cork industry.
Due to his experience in green roofs, he is often invited to teach courses in various parts of the country and abroad, as well as being a guest speaker at major international events.
Paulo Palha was the founder and is the current president of the National Green Roof Association (www.greenroofs.pt). His work includes coordinating the group responsible for the first Portuguese technical guide for the design, construction and maintenance of green roofs. He was also the author and coordinator of the Porto Fifth Elevation Project (PQAP), an initiative of the ANCV with the Porto City Council, which aimed to develop a strategy for the inclusion of green roofs in the urban and environmental strategy of the city of Porto. The PQAP project has won international recognition and awards.
Paulo Palha is President of the European Federation of Green Roof Associations (EFB), an institution that represents the largest network of European experts on nature-based solutions for cities.
He represents Portugal in the World Green Infrastructure Network (WGIN).
He founded Landlab (www.landlab.pt), a company dedicated to the development and commercialisation of systems that promote the water cycle, vegetation in built structures and noise reduction. With this initiative, he aims to make some of the systems he works with in his projects available to all professionals in the sector.
He is a Climate Reality Leader, trained by Al Gore.
His latest project/start-up focuses on using plastic waste from the sea to create vertical gardens.
Passionate about the sea, Paulo Palha is an active sailor and frequently participates in SB20 and J80 class regattas, sometimes representing Portugal.
